Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.
What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.
The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.
So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.
If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.
What to do?
- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.
- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.
- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.
- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

Lately, I've been watching a string of documentaries that all have that seemingly little in common.
The Corporation by Mark Achbar and Jennifer Abbott that documents the 'spectacular rise of corporations.' This film also exposes how government who charter and are supposed to monitor corporations for any wrong doing have been progressively deregulated, especially during the Reagan and Bush administrations. In place of deregulation, the government relies on the corporations to act ethically...but one of the most startling points this film makes is that these corporations have only one pertinent obligation...to make their shareholders Richer!!!...[pause to absorb the irony]... However, as many of you might have guessed, making money and abidding the rules of common, business ethnics are rarely, if ever, in sync
Maxed Out chronicles our debt addiction and the 'staggering financial burden' average Americans are currently under. Examines how credit card companies and lenders want you to defaut on your payments and continue to be in debt until you DIE! and they have acted unethically to ensure you stay that way including having a major finanical contributor to G.W. Bush's campaign, MBNA, write a bill that makes it more difficult for consumers to file for bankruptcy. Families, crushed under surmounting debt are interviewed as well as creditors who are legally allowed to hound their customers to the point that many of them flirt with the idea of suicide. Two mothers interviewed, lobbied to have the federal government prohibit credit card companies from advertising on college campuses (who recieve 13 million if allowed). Both had children who were crushed by credit card debt and subsequently committed suicide in their dorm rooms.
No End in Sight, Oscar nominated documentary by Charles Ferguson that 'examines the decisions that led to the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and the handling of the subsequent occupation by President George W. Bush and his administration. Fantastic examination of how the unilateral decision making of persons ill-chosen by the Bush administration to lead reconstruction efforts in Iraq and led to the exacerbation of an already potentially volatile situation.
Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room...that exposes a 'serious lesson in potential trappings of dishonesty and unethical behavior dogging corporate America today. You know those brown outs California suffered that skyrocketed the price of electricity a few years ago. That was enron stockbrokers turning them off at will to drive up the price making billions for their company by raping the state of California.
When the Levees Broke, a documentary chronicling just before and after the levees broke during Hurricane Katrina. FEMA, Michael Brown...nough said, right?..oh no, but there's so much more...
What do all these films have in common: The Bush administration. The blame laid at their feet varies with each documentary, But taken together: the level of abuse financial contributors are allowed to get away with, the level of patronage and employing of numerous incompetents to positions were even a keen understanding of their job description is not even understood let alone what they should do when the shit hits the fan.
I live in Chicago. Believe me, we here know about the scandals brought on by patronage. But it seems to me that the federal regulators here should turn their attention back on Washington, D.C. There you will find the most insidious kind of patronage.
I'm not saying its all George W. Bush's doing...I'm saying that in my opinion he is the worst puppet president we have ever seen. The shady dealings that have gone on during his administration have allowed the American people to be raped on so many different fronts and that have sent this economy spiraling due predatory lending, corporate deregulation and monitoring, and in war we can't for the life of us get out of that continues to breed animosity towards the U.S. and from an enemy that has sworn as never before to revenge itself upon us. What's sad is I can't blame them, the Iraqis have lost more than most of us know or will ever willingly acknowledge.
The buck stops with the president...doesn't it? A president who defers all his decision making to his VP and inner team who have comprehensive ties to oil, credit card, and other corporate companies. A president who doesn't take the advice from academic and military institutions put in place to know all there is to know about a given situation and what to do for any eventualities, but instead employs men who know next to nothing. A commander-in-chief who doesn't protect his soldiers with the necessary armor protection, who wages a war without the necessary, comprehensive planning beforehand of how to get us out of it, but relies more on his naviete, rigid moralistic stance, and refusal to question the motives of those around him.
His Legacy is this...what we have today...and what's written above is only the tip of the iceberg for this sinking ship.
Which is sad because I still think this country has great potential to do right by its citizens and abroad.
